German measles (rubella)

Time from exposure to illness: 14 to 21 days.

First signs:

Starts with a headache, sore throat, runny nose, fever, aches and pains. Small pink spots appear on the face, and rapidly spread over the body. The rash usually lasts only a few days.

At home:
  • Give paracetamol  for fever and pain.
  • Child needs lots of rest.
  • Keep away from others for at least 4days after the rash appears, or until child is fully recovered.
  • People who have been in contact don’t need to stay home. Pregnant women should see a doctor immediately.
