Mumps

Time from exposure to illness: 14 to 21 days.

First signs:

Painful, sore, swollen areas around the jawline from ears to neck. May also have a high fever, headache and vomiting.

At home:
  • Paracetamol  for fever and pain.
  • Give lots of rest, soft foods (like ice-cream and jelly) and cool drinks.
  • Keep away from others for at least nine days after swelling starts or until child is fully recovered. People who have been in contact don’t need to stay home.
  • Can be infectious for six days before swelling appears.
